Avant Garde Show
Hello, my name is David Miessler-Kubanek. I'm originally from Michigan, having moved to Iowa in 1994. I graduated from The University of Iowa in 1999 with a BA in English (poetry was my thing) and in 2004 with a BFA in Art (graphic design).

I was Executive Director for The Coaster Project, a James Gang endeavor. It officially launched in 2007 thanks much in part to Zach Hoyt's considerate efforts. And it was repeated in early 2008 with Zach at the helm.

I'm a Freelance Graphic Designer who's been known to volunteer in the area: The 10,000 Hours Show (10K3 tickets, t-shirts, and annual report); and Dreamwell Theatre (posters).

Currently I am both a full-time news artist at Gazette Communications, a media company in Cedar Rapids, as well as a freelance designer. In the past I have also been employed both in and outside of my chosen profession, as well as a Macbride Raptor Project voluteer owl feeder. Hobbies include(d): Olympic-style fencing (preferring the foil weapon), volunteering at the Quad Cities Greyhound Adoption center, cooking, hopefully sailing this year and reading a lot about design and Web tech.

While in school I was honored for my contribution in the Global I.D. Card (Magazine/Online) Contest as First runner up, and was a recipient of the Len Everett Art Scholarship. More recently, I won a couple awards in the 2009 Iowa APME contest: Third place in news graphics (Kurt Warner spread), and second place for online special package (Year of the River).
